Briavel's Castle, Forest of Dean
Henry
St Clair, son of William, the 6th Baron, was held
captive at St Briavel's (pronounced with a long first
"e", "Brevels") following the Battle of
Dunbar, 1296. See the Sinclair
Timeline in the Clan Sinclair USA website. It
is in the village now known as St Briavels (without
apostrophe) in the Forest of Dean, West Gloucestershire,
England. The Forest of Dean was a Royal Hunting Forest,
and the Castle at the time of King John was became
the adminstrative centre of the Forest and the home of
the King's Constable of the Forest of Dean. The
Constable at the time of Henry St Clair's imprisonment
was William (VII) Hathaway.
