On the 11th August 1806, in Plaza San Martin, Buenos Aires, the first British Invasion of Buenos Aires was defeated, and is remembered on the memorial pictured below right.
The first British invasion was lead by General Beresford with 1,500 men consisting of the 17th Light Dragoons and 71st Regiment of Foot, (Highland Light Infantry).
The second invasion took place in May 1807 under Lieutenant-General John Whitelocke with a much larger force and ended with a cease fire on 7th July 1807.
